~ Important facts to remember when looking for a Counsellor/Therapist ~
Seeking counselling can be a scary experience. Making that first step to contact a counsellor could be the beginning of a happier and more successful life style through making healthier choices and talking through issues which you find uncomfortable or difficult to cope with. It is extremely important when looking for a therapist to make sure that you feel at ease with her/him so that trust and a good therapeutic relationship can develop over time.
This may mean looking around, speaking or even meeting several different counsellors to find the right person for you.
It is important that they are registered with a governing body such as United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) or British Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BACP).
This ensures that they have adequate training and qualifications and have to work to a Code of Ethics or an Ethical Framework.
It is vital for you to feel safe, heard and understood within the therapeutic relationship. Being 'contained' in a way that may help you to feel less isolated and really supported whilst you begin your journey of healing.
Counsellors & Psychotherapists all work to different time scales. Some will offer six to eight sessions, others offer longer term work depending on your individual needs.
